Notes for Web developers and site administrators for the Onega Web and Email server

Your web site is hosted on a Sun Cobalt Raq 550, the complete manual of which is available from the help '?' menu in the control panel (see "To log onto the system…" below for more details)

To log into the system go to http://www.domainName.com/login and enter your username and password (same as for FTP email etc.). If you are a .co.uk, .org etc domain then you would obviously need to change the .com to reflect your domain. If your logon has site administrative privileges then you can administer your domain from this control panel.

When you upload your web site the web upload it to the /web directory from the ftp root. When you log on with an ftp client, it will push you to your own web directory this is not the same as your root directory. If you drop your website in your own directory it will not be visible to visitors to you web site address. To access your root directory you need to change directory in your ftp client (i.e. go up a level to the root). Don't use windows internet explorer as it will not allow you to do so.

Any CGI scripts would generally go into a cgi directory off the web directory from the ftp root. If the file association is .pl, then they will execute as opposed to being downloaded, and you can use standard .htaccess files to control directory access with Apache.

Perl is currently set to 5.6.0 (with backported security patches as appropriate), which should be fine with most scripts. PHP is currently around version 4.3.

You can customize the 404 not found errors html page, this can be done by following the instructions on Page 161 of the manual (putting the files in the /error directory).

The system has a couple of extras beyond those originally supplied by Sun, such as an email anti virus and anti spam system, and enhanced versions of PHP & mysql, webmail etc. but there is a lot that can be done within the scope of the basic feature set. If you are after any advanced developer information, the answer to just about any question can be found in the help manuals.
